Here are a few images from my vault show at Quirk Gallery in Richmond. My most recent works are on the top row of brooches. These are from a series which deal with masculinity and fertility. I think the subject matter is quite obvious. You can also see three brooches in the lower set which consist of a frame secured by a nylon prong setting which doubles as a pin back support. I'm showing a number of new necklaces using lattice beads on stainless steel braided wire. These works are super functional as well as technically interesting. Outside of the vault in the main gallery is this year's "Sparkle Plenty" exhibition... you should check it out!

I'm very excited to announce that I will have a very intimate solo exhibition at Quirk in Richmond VA. For the month of November I will have the Vault all to myself. I will be debuting many new works and have a few statement pieces on display as well. Richmond is such a wonder little city, it's just south enough to pick up that Southern charm, but not more that a few hours from my home base. I'll visit with friends, give a gallery talk, and slink around the town. The opening is Thursday November third at 5:30. If you are in the area feel free to swing by.

NextFab Lamp Design Challenge

NextFab Studio’s Lighting Design Challenge invited designers to use their high-tech fabrication facility to create an innovative and functional lamp. Teams of up to two members came in with an idea, designed it, and then produced the components for the prototype using NextFab’s rapid prototyping equipment. It was a great experience and the peoples at NextFab were most helpful with production of our design.

I had the great fortune to be assisted by my teammate Amanda Bowman who not only knows much of the NURBS environment, but is a terrific speller too. (Bit of an inside joke)

Anyway... Once we arrived at NextFab's studio after the design and part fabrication portion of the challenge was complete, we found a box full of parts. Assembly begins!

Materials consisted of acrylic, birch plywood, mild steel, and the lamp's electrical components.

Our design was simple but elegant, with CNC laser and plasma cut components which assemble using NO pins, glue, bolts, screws, or any sign of weakness what so ever. Remember this was a competition of sorts, so we had our game faces on for sure. Amanda helped rein in my blue sky, far out, theoretical design approach and the results are quite pleasing. Thanks Amanda.

Some assembly required... No worries we have designed a slot and tab system which is held to exact tolerances. Plex panels are joined to their wood support structures.

A bit of hand finishing is needed to clean the slag from the plasma cut steel part. Surprisingly it didn't take much as the plasma does a great job of cutting the mild steel sheet.

Here is the finished part with the electric component installed.

We can't forget about Mother Nature while we're geeking out. We've chosen a compact florescent bulb. It's good for the environment and I love the spiralness of the element.

Velvet Da Vinci and the "Plastic Show"

They consist of a few Selective Laser Sintered Nylon components, and both synthetic and natural fibers. Also some faux pearls for good measure. DMLS Cobalt Chromium rings #2

They have been polished by means of "MMP" Micro Machining Process. Fun stuff.

So here is the first instance of a stone being set in a DMLS Cobalt Chromium ring. My good friend Kip, who is completing his MFA at Tyler, has succeeded in placing a 2mm Diamond with a 4 prong setting. He had to use a few special diamond dusted burs to cut the seat, and a bit more force than he is accustomed to but it was a complete success! My wife was present to offer immediate user feed back. Very happy day and much good stuff to come. Stay tuned.

What's this? The newest in new in the news. Anyway here is my most recent bracelet. I've named it the "circle in the square" for obvious reasons. It really takes advantage of selective laser sintering's ability to realize internal and external parts in one object. Here is the latest. Along the two part line. I wasn't thrilled over this piece during the designing. Now that it's realized in a tangible state I like it. It's a "bit much" compared to my other production stuff but that's ok. It was printed by Shapeways and the color (or lack of) is intense. Such white whiteness. Much goodness. This work is going to Gallery Loupe in Montclair NJ.

Artist Statement 6-1-2009

I am a designer of couture and production jewelry. My en devours include the pursuit of beauty and truth, the creation of aesthetic wearability, the union of movement, body, and objects.

I take advantage of a number of technological advances which have developed over the past decade. Mostly the digital design environment of 3D modeling software. I also rely on a number of additive output processes which allow my work to acquire both form and function unattainable with typical production means.

My initial digital work drew inspiration from undersea creatures of the mollusk family. Their soft bodies allow them to shift their form while they float weightless in their environment. Often they combine soft bodies with rigid shells or connective tissue. I have used silicone rubber to mimic these soft parts, and nylon for the shell like sections. With the combination of these two states I have created a novel form of connection which allows for flexibility while maintaining the objects integrity.

My most recent work is an exploration of the limits of my materials and processes. In certain pieces I have eliminated the flexible components. Instead I rely on the characteristics of the material to provide for the functionality of the object. By designing to a specific function I am able to allow the material to exhibit flexure and in turn create an elegant solution to wearability factors.

I should point out one piece in particular since it is unlike any that has preceded it. It is the “Quad Loop” neck piece. In my pursuit for technological advantages, I have found an additive manufacturing process that starts with a powdered metal and by using precise high intensity lasers is able to realize objects in a new production scenario. This piece is more flexible than a casting, more detailed than a forging, and more complex in profile than an extrusion. It is also larger than most one piece metal objects intended for the body. It is of a single strand of metal which loops around two spirals and back on to itself but has no solder joint or connection point. It is created using the DMLS (direct metal laser sintering) process. I plan to continue my exploration of this application in the near future, as I feel it will make a major contribution to the field of metalsmithing and the crafts at large.

SNAG 2009 A revolution in Philadelphia

This past week I had the great opportunity to attend the Society of North American Goldsmiths annual conference. At the very least it was a blast. At the most it was well beyond my greatest expectations. I have to thank Whitney Couch from Object Fetish for starting the conference of on a good note. The place was mobbed with so much goodness it left my head spinning. The pin swap was a huge success. I scored one of Arthur Hash's Coffee Stains. Sweet, that's the real thing! Also my former professor Rod McCormick's pin is among one of my favorites. I even had a feather pin installed in my hat... very pimp. My wife Cristen was there to assist in the acquisition of our new pin collection. Fun stuff.
Too much material for one post so I'll jump through the high lites.

Here are a few better shots of my most recent DMLS work. I need to thank RQM for their expert skill and knowledge. This piece slips around the neck. It's super light and has no problem holding on. Check the detail to see the changing profile. You can't do that with extrusion methods. Good luck trying to cast it as well. (cast metal doesn't flex much... don't you know)

Lattice Structure

This piece exhibits one of the newest directions in my production line. As you can see it consists of a few similar components that combine to create a delicate "sum of it's parts" feeling, while maintaining a high level of structural integrity. I plan to issue this work as part of a series of no more than 50 pieces. The material is SLS Nylon. It is intended to be worn around the neck.

Well it's friday and I'm bumping around the studio with some odds and ends.
I'm dying some non-jewelry SLS parts. Not very exciting. Well in case you are interested.

Here's a big vat of RIT dye. It needs to be brought up to its boiling point before you add the parts to be dyed

So I toss them all into the pot and stir vigorously for about 15 minutes.

Looks like it will need more time in the mix. I'm going for black and since the parts are so thick, we have to be more agro with the dying.

Did you know that IGES files created in SolidWorks can be opened in Rhino and edited with control points? So far no separation of polysurfaces. Fun stuff.
This piece slips over the hand an sits on the wrist. The design allows for flexure as it fits over the hand.

This piece is very interesting. It consists of arrayed and offset apertures with much filleting. Very difficult to render with "photoworks" without deep dark spots and intense shadows. Once again this piece will be realized in SLS and dyed.
